A Weekly Inspirational Thought from Ken Korkow

What's the Highest and Best Use of Your Life?

One of the appraisal approaches we used when determining property valuation is called 'highest and best use'. If someone comes to me and says: "I inherited 160 acres. Please tell me what it's worth." - I'd begin by asking questions: "Where's it located?" "What's it being used for now?" "What's going on with adjacent land?" etc.

If the land is in the middle of Nebraska, flat, good soil, has a center pivot with abundant water available - I'm guessing we're looking at from $4,000 to $6,000 per acre.

If the 160 acres is by our ranch in South Dakota - with poor soils, lots of rocks, hilly terrain, no wild-life habitat and annual rainfall that can go as low as 7 inches per year - you're more in the $400 per acre range.

But if your 160 acres sits in the middle of downtown Dallas - now we're talking Big Dollar$ per square foot (at 43,560 square feet per acre)!

So - what's the highest and best use of your life?

Today I was reading something that got me to thinking:

"Look at God's incredible waste of His saints, according to the world's judgment. God seems to plant His saints in the most useless places. And then we say, "God intends for me to be here because I am so useful to Him." Yet Jesus never measured His life by how or where He was of the greatest use. God places His saints where they will bring the most glory to Him, and we are totally incapable of judging where that may be."

-- Oswald Chambers, "My Utmost For His Highest"

Certainly - Jesus had many talents and abilities - but they didn't determine what He did with His life. Instead - His primary motivation was to "know and obey the will of the Father". (John 5:30; 6:38 - 40; 15:10; Mark 12:28 - 30)

I've been a 'natural' at 2 things in my life (killing people with a 60 mm mortar and making lots of money by selling farms and ranches) but I don't do those things anymore.

As I've had to wrestle with 'What's the highest and best use of my life?' - I've found my highest calling to be knowing Christ more intimately and living Him more intentionally. NOTHING ELSE comes remotely close! NOTHING ELSE is as exciting or rewarding!

What about you? Do you have an Eternal Vision that ignites your Earthly Passion?

COWBOY LOGIC: If you're not living for something worth dying for ~ change now ~ or go buy a coffin.

"And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice-the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him. Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." Romans 12:1-2
